Introducing the Hull Heat Network
The Hull Heat Network will provide low-carbon heat and hot water to public and private sector buildings within the city centre of Hull. It is set to drive economic growth, create job opportunities, provide energy security and build climate-resilient neighbourhoods.
Delivered by Vital Energi in partnership with Hull City Council and backed by investment from the Green Heat Network Fund, Levelling Up Partnership, and the National Wealth Fund, this innovative project will transform the heating supply to 38 buildings during phase 1 of the project.
The network will deliver an estimated 110,000 tonnes of CO2 savings over 40 years - the equivalent of taking 55,000 cars off the road - whilst providing connected buildings with a more reliable and resilient source of heat and hot water.
In addition to the heat network, Vital Energi has committed to investing £3 million into the local communit by -
- utilising local supply chain
- delivering educational workshops
- providing work experience and apprenticeship opportunities for Hull residents
This project will accelerate the city's green industry, while creating a healthier environment for the residents of Hull and a healthier planet for all.

How will the network work
- A heat network supplies heat from a central source (such as an energy centre) to connected customers via a network of underground, insulated pipes carrying hot water
- Networks can span entire cities and service many different types of buildings, such as office blocks, residential towers and universities to name a few
- The building is then able to enjoy the benefits of instant heat and hot water provided via a low carbon, resilient heating method
- This approach avoids the need for individual boilers or electric heaters to be installed in individual buildings, reducing maintenance time and cost
- Due to its modular design, the network has huge potential for future expansion, creating opportunities for new connections across Hull
