About heat networks

A heat network supplies heat from a central source (such as an energy centre) to connected customers via a network of insulated underground pipes.

These networks can span entire cities, supplying heat and hot water to many different types of buildings - from residential blocks to commercial and historical buildings.

How the Hull Heat Network works

Hull City Council is working with leading energy solutions company Vital Energi to deliver the Hull Heat Network. It will include the construction of a new energy centre at Trippett Street car park and a heat network of underground pipework installed throughout the city.

The energy centre will house a range of air-source and water-source heat pumps to generate low-carbon heat, with a gas boiler installed to provide additional support if needed, making it highly reliable.

By reducing reliance on gas, the new Hull Heat Network will cut local emissions and improve air quality. This will help make Hull a cleaner, healthier place to live and ensure heat and hot water are available on demand to residents and businesses in the city centre.
