This will bring the city closer to delivering low-carbon heat to buildings across Hull city centre.

Installation of the flue and thermal stores marks a major step forward for Hull City Council’s new heat network, which will provide heating and hot water to buildings across the city centre.  

The 23-metre-tall flue sits next to the thermal stores, which will allow heat to be stored, and then accessed later, to enable the network to maintain performance during periods of peak demand.   

By retaining and releasing heat when required, the network will ensure a consistent supply of heating and hot water to all connected businesses and organisations. 

The Energy Centre’s primary heat generation will be from air source and water source heat pumps, which will reduce reliance on gas and reduce carbon emissions across the city centre.  

Councillor Charles Quinn, portfolio holder for environment at Hull City Council, said -

"The arrival of the flue and thermal stores is another important milestone for the Hull Heat Network and demonstrates the significant progress being made.   

“These key components will help deliver a modern, efficient and resilient heating network that will benefit businesses and organisations across the city centre.”  

Once operational, the Hull Heat Network will distribute heat and hot water from the Energy Centre through a network of insulated underground pipes connected to buildings across the city centre.   

The system will remove the need for individual heating systems in city centre properties, including -

• council buildings
• residential blocks
• educational establishments
• private sector organisations
