A district heat network is a method of distributing heat from a central location to residential, public and commercial buildings via a network of underground pipes. The heat can be generated using many different technologies - in the case of Hull Heat Network, it will be air-source and water-source heat pumps. Whilst reliably meeting the energy requirements of large, energy-intensive areas such as cities, they often result in significant carbon reductions and more stable energy bills.

The network will be owned by Hull City Council.

An energy centre is a central heat source for a heat network. It can house many different technologies that provide the heat for the network, which is then carried from the energy centre via underground pipes as hot water to a network of connected buildings.  

The £42 million Hull Heat Network is backed by -

• £15m investment from the Green Heat Network Fund – Levelling Up Partnership Fund.
• Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme.
• National Wealth Fund.
